li P 1 - 18 Filtering out place assimilations in perception I : Context - sensitivity at an acoustic / phonetic level

چکیده
In fluent speech, the acoustic realisation of a single word is dependent on the context due to connected speech processes. One of these processes is place assimilation, due to which, for instance, the Dutch word /tFyn/ (garden) may be pronounced as [tFym] in the composite /tFynbank/ (garden bench). Gaskell and MarslenWilson (e.g., 1998) proposed that there is a mechanism that filters out the consequences of place assimilation in perception. Gaskell and Marslen-Wilson assume that this filter is 1) perceptual in nature and 2) works on an abstract phonological level.

Significance of Invariant Acoustic Cues in a Probabilistic Framework for Landmark-based Speech Recognition
A probabilistic framework for landmark-based speech recognition that utilizes the sufficiency and context invariance properties of acoustic cues for phonetic features is presented. Binary classifiers of the manner phonetic features "sonorant", "continuant" and "syllabic" operate on each frame of speech, each using a small number of relevant and sufficient acoustic parameters to generate probabi...
متن کاملPlace assimilation across words in running speech: corpus analysis and perception.
Place assimilation can lead to neutralization of segmental contrasts. It is controversial, however, to what extent such neutralizations actually happen in natural speech. This study examines: (i) the degree to which regressive place assimilations occur in word final consonants in conversational German, and (ii) whether these assimilations are perceived as neutralized by listeners. The productio...
متن کاملAcoustic and visual phonetic features in the mcgurk effect - an audiovisual speech illusion
Information from the acoustic speech signal and the talking face is integrated into a unified percept. This is demonstrated in the McGurk effect, in which discrepant visual articulation changes the auditory perception of a consonant. We studied acoustic (A) and visual (V) phonetic features that contribute to audiovisual speech perception by measuring the McGurk effect in two vowel contexts, [a]...
متن کاملCoping with phonological assimilation in speech perception: evidence for early compensation.
The pronunciation of the same word may vary considerably as a consequence of its context. The Dutch word tuin (English, garden) may be pronounced tuim if followed by bank (English, bench), but not if followed by stoel (English, chair). In a series of four experiments, we examined how Dutch listeners cope with this context sensitivity in their native language. A first word identification experim...
متن کاملConflicting acoustic cues in stop perception
In this paper we will return to a basic question in phonetics: the relation between acoustic cues and perceived phonetic units. The research has been focused on the perception of unvoiced stops. The rationale for conducting the experiments is to further illuminate and support the hypothesis that speech perception is a dynamic and adaptive perceptual process in the interpretation of acoustic cue...
